Skim Coating Services
Skim coating is the art of applying a thin layer of joint compound over walls or ceilings to create a smooth, flawless surface. Known as a level 5 finish, skim coating is often used in new construction on surfaces that will receive critical light exposure, ensuring that tape joints and other imperfections don’t show through the painted finish.
Skim Coating is an Excellent Solution
In remodels, skim coating is an excellent solution for covering imperfections in existing walls and ceilings, offering a sleek and modern look that aligns with today’s design trends.
Textured finishes, like popcorn and knockdown, are quickly becoming outdated, with many homeowners opting for a cleaner, smooth surface. While popcorn texture was widely removed in the 1990s and replaced with knockdown, the demand for knockdown texture is now fading as well.
Removing Knockdown
However, removing knockdown texture is more complex than removing popcorn because it doesn’t cover the entire drywall surface and must be painted to achieve a finished look.
Depending on the type of paint used, knockdown may not come off easily. The best way to eliminate knockdown is to skim coat it with joint compound, typically requiring a minimum of three coats and thorough sanding.
Skim coating can also be used to revive old, painted walls by hiding paint runs, dings, and other blemishes, resulting in a fresh, smooth appearance. While this process can be time-consuming and generates a significant amount of sanding dust, the end result is well worth the effort.
A Clean Polished Finish
The clean, polished finish of a skim-coated wall or ceiling adds a touch of elegance and modernity to any space, making it a worthwhile investment for any home or renovation project.
