Popcorn Ceiling Removal West Palm Beach

Popcorn ceilings were popular since the late 1950’s for several different reasons.

Installing popcorn ceilings is an inexpensive way to hide flaws in a ceiling that may include cracks, poor workmanship and damage. This popcorn textured spray-on finish is also quick to apply and because of their thick texture, they hide imperfections. Having popcorn ceilings has been reported to cut down on sound in multi-level housing. At the same time, they are difficult to clean, collect dust and pet hair, and they make a home look dated.

The Benefits of Removing Popcorn and Installing Smooth Finish Ceilings

Popcorn ceilings, because of their thick texture, make repainting ceilings challenging. When you remove a popcorn ceiling texture, we prepare it so that you are left with a flawless finish- ready for a slick finish, a knockdown finish or any paint design you desire.

Popcorn ceilings are difficult to repair especially if you have a water leak. When you replace your ceilings with a slick or knockdown finish, if there were a leak in the future, you will save both time and money on repairing any damage.

In addition to that, any homes with popcorn ceilings built prior to 1977 can become health hazards if they contain asbestos.

Lastly, it is much easier to clean a ceiling with a smooth finish than it is with a popcorn texture.

What Makes us Better than the other Popcorn Removal Contractors in West Palm Beach?

When popcorn ceilings are applied, it eliminates the need to finish joints and paint the ceilings. So, when you remove popcorn ceilings you are left with unfinished joints in the drywall. Unfortunately when many other contractors remove popcorn ceilings, they do not finish the joints properly before they apply a slick or knockdown finish.

Other contractors will simply skim coat the ceilings with 2 tight coats of compound, and then sand and paint the ceilings. We do more than that and that is what makes us specialists. After we remove popcorn ceilings, we run a mud box over the joints. This fills the beveled edges of the drywall and makes the butt joints more gradual.

How do you Properly Prepare a Ceiling for Knockdown or Slick Finish?

When the ceilings have peaks and angles we like to use straight flex to make sharp clean angles. Straight flex is a joint tape that is made of fiberglass that makes it more rigid than paper tape. Straight flex is also much stronger than paper tape. When we are setting straight flex we set it with a laser so we can make the lines as accurate as possible.

Maximum Preparation for Smooth Finish or Knockdown Ceilings

Once all the tape joints have been built out with compound, we skim coat the entire surface of the drywall and sand the ceilings. The skim coat is a tight coat of compound that layers down all the drywall fibers and fills any divots in the ceiling.

Once the ceilings are dry, they are sanded. After the ceilings are sanded we use lights to check for any flaws. We then work on any flaws. Now the ceilings are as fine as possible and ready for paint.

Most other popcorn ceiling removal companies in Palm Beach do not work this hard to prepare ceilings for paint. They typically cut corners and simply put, we do not cut any corners. We want you to experience the optimum outcome with your new ceilings.

Knockdown Ceilings vs Smooth Finish Ceilings

Smooth Finish

A smooth or slick finish is perfect if you are thinking about selling your home or if you want to upgrade you home to a more modern feel. Many buyers prefer a smooth finish because they want a blank canvas to create a look that matches their style. A more obvious reason is because smooth or slick textured ceilings are “in” right now so your home will rise above any other houses that still have popcorn ceilings.

If you are looking to make a room look larger, a smooth finish can give a more open feeling to a room and add more light. It is recommended to use lighter colors or white if you want a small room to appear larger. On the other hand, if you have a large room, adding warmer colors to finish the ceilings can make a room feel warmer and more comfortable.

Knockdown Ceiling

If you prefer the textured look, you may want to consider a knockdown ceiling.

Unlike the outdated popcorn look, the knockdown ceiling can be subtler in terms of texture. They can also make a room feel very welcoming, warm and homely. If you want to have a complete finish, which will lift and enhance the visual appeal of your room, ask us about the knockdown ceiling. If you’re unsure if the knockdown look will match your taste, we would be happy to take a look and provide our recommendations.
